Are You an Imposter? (Part 2 of 2)


Last Friday I was sitting at Panera with my good friend Jason, both of us hard at work on our individual business projects, when he hit me with this question, “Do you think I should recreate this exercise and put it in my own framework so that I’m not taking it directly from <insert author’s name>?”

I immediately told him, “No.”

Now before you start calling me an accomplice to a robbery hear me out.

Jason went on to explain how even though he made a few modifications to the overall exercise; when it was all said and done, the foundation for this particular assessment would be taken directly from another author. At first…he felt like an imposter.

I proceeded to tell him that there was no reason to reinvent the wheel and reassured him that sharing this exercise with his tribe would NOT make him an imposter, but a trusted leader at the helm of his community. In fact, I reminded him that the author he was borrowing from (and citing of course) most likely took the framework from someone else, who stole it from someone else, who got it from someone else. In fact, it was Pablo Picasso who said, “Good artists copy, great artists steal.” (tweetable)

Whether it’s a framework, exercise, melody, beat to a song, technique, strategy, or format, the bottom line is that we are all inspired by and create adaptations of the works which moves us.
Kiby Furguson reassures us that “Everything is a remix,” and even the bible claims that “there’s nothing new under the sun.” (Ecclesiastes 1:9)

What does this mean for you?

It means you can take that imposter syndrome and toss it out with the other garbage in your head that’s blocking you from doing your work that really matters.

So what action will you take today?

Perhaps it’s: making a phone call, buying that domain name, scheduling your first informational interview, or citing the source and shipping your user guide. Whatever it is…now that you know you’re not an imposter I suggest you get to work.

The world needs that special something that only you have to give so hop to it.

    I’M FAMOUS! LOL! Great post T! It goes back to the theory of putting old wine in a new bottle and that it may just be that the bottle you choose to package the wine this time will resonate with someone in a way that previous wine bottles just couldn’t. It was no fault of the “old bottle(r)”, just a preference or connection from the buyer that sometimes is either there or its not.
